StudentFocusedWorldClass.FortheteachersstaandstudentsoKingsportCitySchoolsthisstate-mentcontinuestobetheocusowhatwedoeachdayandthevisionowhatwehopetobecome.Itre-ectsthephilosophythatweenthusiasticallyembodywhereeverysinglechildthatentersoneoourschoolsdeservestohavehisorherindividualacademicneedsanalyzedandaddressedinthehighestcali-beroeducationalenvironment.Werecognizethatourcommunityexpectsthisousandweembracetheopportunitytohelpourstudentsrisetomeetthechallengesandopportunitiesthatpreparethemorsuchanexcitinguture.Wetalkotenaboutbeingaworldclassschoolsystemandwecontinuallyquestionourselvesabouthowweareabletomeasureourprogresstowardsuchalotygoal.ThisAnnualReportisintendedtoprovideyouawiderangeoinormationaboutourschoolsandprogramssothatyoucanhavetheanswertothatveryquestion.Theresultsoundherearetheproductoadministratorsteachersandstaworkingtogetherindata-drivencollaborativeproessionallearningcommunitiestosupportexemplarylearningorallstudentsthroughaguaranteedandviablecur-riculumwhileemphasizingacommitmenttotrulyengagingamiliesandthecommunity.OnceagainthisyeartheevidenceshowsthatgreatthingscanhappenwhentheentireKingsportcommunitybandstogethertoensuresuccessorourstudents.Studentsteachersandadministratorshaveallreceivedstateandnationalaccoladesortheiraccomplishmentsthispastyear.ThecommitmenttostrongcurriculumandteachingromkindergartenthroughhighschoolhasresultedinarecordnumberostudentstakingandpassingrigorousAdvancedPlacementcourseworkatDobyns-Bennett.StateandnationalassessmentsshowthatKCSstudentsareachievingatornearall-timehighlevels.Inactrecentresultsromtheinternationally-normedPISAtestshowthatiKCSstudentswereactuallytheirowncountrytheywouldrank5thintheworldinmath4thintheworldinscienceand1stintheworldinreading.ClosertohomeKingsportCitySchoolswasnamedthetopschooldistrictinTennesseebytheStateCollaborativeonReormingEducationaterbeingnamedafnalistortheTennesseeDistrictSCOREprizeorthesecondconsecutiveyear.DotheseresultsindicatethatwehavearrivedatWorldClassstatusWellwedontlookatexcellenceasadestinationbutratheradescriptionothejourneyweundertakeeachandeveryday.ThepledgeoeveryoneinvolvedwithKingsportCitySchoolsisthatbyjoiningtogetherwithourparentsstakeholdersandtheentireKingsportcommunitywecancontinuetoprovidethetypeoenvironmentsthatwillalloweveryKingsportstudenttoreachthepinnacleotheirpotential.ThankyouorjoiningusinthatpursuitasweprepareourchildrentosucceedintheexcitinguturethatliesbeorethemAMESSAGEFROMSUPERINTENDENTDR.AILSHIEStudentFocusedWorldClassWATCHDR.AILSHIESSUPERINTENDENTVIDEOBLOGONYOUTUBEDr.LyleAilshieSuperintendentKingsportCitySchools StudentHealthServicesForstudentstohavethebestopportunityoracademicsuccessasystemthatsup-portsstudenthealthiscritical.InKCSthisisaccomplishedthroughtheHealthServicesDepartment.WithaRegisteredNurseineachschooleveryKingsportstudenthasaccesstoahealthexpertthattakesresponsibilityortheoversightohealthservicesandeducation.OnadailybasisRNsprovideregularandemergen-cyhealthcaretostudentsstaandvisitors.Thisisaccomplishedthrougheectiveongoingcollaborationwithamilieshealthcareprovidersandthecommunity.TheschoolnurseplaysacriticalroleinempoweringstudentstomakeappropriatehealthcaredecisionsorliesaysNursingSupervisorVickiJohnston.Acrossthedistrictschoolnurseshaveseenadramaticincreaseinchildrenwithchronicandcomplexmedicalneeds.Theschoolnursesandhealthassistantsareverygoal-ori-entedandoutcome-driventopromotestudenthealthandattendance.Ourmaingoalasnursesistokeepourstudentshealthyandsaesotheyaremoresuccess-ulintheclassroom.Themedicalcareweprovideorourstudentswithacuteandchronicmedicalconditionsplaysavitalroleinmaximizingstudentopportunitiesoracademicsuccess.Throughacommunitypartnershipin2013KCSinitiatedaninnovativewellnessprogramtoprovideanursepractitionerinthedistrict.Thisschoolyearthepro-gramiscontinuingwiththeadditionotelemedicineequipmentwhichallowsthenursepractitionertoperormamedicalvisitromanotherlocationthroughsecureconfdentialtelecommunications.Thisserviceallowsthenursepractitionertonotonlypersonallytreatstudentsdailyineachoourschoolsbutalsoutilizescuttingedgetechnologythatallowsmedicalvisitstobedoneromanothersecureloca-tion.Parentsmustenrollinthenursepractitionerprogrambeoreastudentcanbemedicallytreated.Inadditionparentsmaychoosetobepresentatschoolorthemedicalvisitortheparentmaymakethedecisiontostayathomeoratworkandthenursewillacilitatethevisitandnotiytheparentothevisitoutcome.KCSisamongthefrstschooldistrictsinTennesseetoutilizethisemergingtechnologytomeetthehealthcareneedsochildrenwhilesupportingacademicsuccessintheclassroomSchoolNutritionServicesTheSchoolNutritionalServicesdepartmentworkstoprovideavarietyohealthyandappetizingoodoptionstoover7000KCSstudentsandemployeeseachday.TaskedwithimplementingandmeetingUSDAguidelinesinallmealselec-tionsSNSstaiscontinuallyseekingwaystoincreaseserviceandoodchoicestomeetindividualneedsandtastes.Duringthe2013-14schoolyearalmost1millionmealswereservedinKCScaeteriasAlongwithprovidingthebestpossibleoodoptionsSchoolNutritionalServicesstaworkstomaintainthesaestandhealthiestdietaryenvironments.AllKCSschoolshavereceivedahealthinspectionscoreo95orgreaterwithsixschoolsDobynsBennettHighSchoolRobinsonMiddleSchoolJohnAdamsJeersonJohnsonandWashingtonElementarySchoolsreceivingaperectscoreo100.NutritionalServicesstaarealsoconstantlyonthelookoutornewandinnovativewaystoprovideadditionalservicestothechildrenandamiliesoKingsport.ThreeschoolsKennedyElementaryJacksonElementaryandSevierMiddleSchoolpar-ticipateinauniversalbreakastprogramthatprovidesareebreakasttoallstu-dentsregardlessoamilyincome.Duringthesummero20142766breakasts22169lunchesand11646snacksweredistributedreeochargethroughtheSummerFeedingProgram.Thisuniqueopportunitywasprovidedat15dierentsitesacrossKingsportsupportingmultiplecommunityagencies.Itwasyetan-otherwaythattheKCSSchoolNutritionalServicesstastrivestobetterthehealthandnutritionoKingsportschildren.SpecialEducationWithover7000studentsattendingKingsportCitySchoolsstudentsareprovidedwithawiderangeoeducationalandsocialopportunitiesthroughtheStudentServicesdepartment.Teachersandadministratorsworkcollaborativelytodevelopindividualizededucationalprogramsthatsupportstudentachievementandgapclosures.Withaocusoneachchildinneedstaassistsgeneralandspecialedu-cationteachersbyprovidingresourcesandinormationthatassistsindesigninginterventionandenrichment.Ourgoalistoprovideawiderangeosupportsandservicestostudentsteach-ersandadministratorsacrossthedistrictsaysKCSDirectoroSpecialEducationLenoreKilgore.Thisincludesproessionallearningsessionsonitemssuchasbehavioralplansandassessmentsresearch-basedliteracyandmathpracticesaccommodationsandmodifcationsandteachingstudentswithhigh-incidencedisabilitieslikeADHDandautism.Byworkingtogetherwecanhelpprovideeachstudentwiththesupportsneededorpersonalgrowthandsuccess.TheseideasarealsootendevelopedthroughpartnershipsoutsidetheKingsportcommunity.KCShasbeenacceptedasanEastTennesseeTRIADteamsponsoredbyVanderbiltUniversity.Thispartnershipprovideshighleveltrainingtocertifedteachersrelatedserviceprovidersparaeducatorsandconsultantswhodirectlyservestudentswithautism.SponsoredbytheTennesseeDepartmentoEduca-tionparticipationinthisprogramisyetanotherotheongoingwaysthatKCSseekstomeettheindividualneedsoeachoitsstudents.SHSSNSSPED
